Arniko Bday!

The Arniko Skateboard store that I work at, turns 1 year old today. So to get a bit of a gathering together I did this little flyer up. Check out the boards and clothing on the website by clicking the link above. Its all a lot better made than this dodgey flyer.

Clean and green

Nepal has the old style chewing gum which comes in flat sticks instead of the capsules. They also come individually wrapped in these cool wrappers. I thought I would stick a few together and have a doodle on the back. Here's the result.

You would think that wearing a tshirt with Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera on it would be pretty shameful for anyone really, in any country. However in Nepal guys rock them like its 1996 or whenever there hey day was. Riding to work this morning inspired this scribble. You dont have to go far over here to see some guy wearing one.

Concrete jungle

My awesome wife purchased this wickedly good sketch book called WALLS Notebook last year. Its got 160 pages of urban walls which you can use as a blank slate. They provide inspiration as well as an interesting backdrop for notes, drawings, or scribbles. You'll be one step closer to being the graffiti artist you've always wanted to be...minus the (doodle in the bum) jail time. If you would like your own you can pick it up at Borders for about 20 bucks. This is only my second drawing in mine so far I am scared of wrecking it. Ps. sorry the image is a real head turner, it was just to small the other way for the detail.

Scribble project

The scribble project was created by illustrator Lisa Currie as a sort of doodled interview. It's fun to see how every person attacks the same sheet in a new way. She then posts them up on the website. Here is mine. Check all the others out as well. Or have a go yourself ya lazy mug.

Flying Goggles

In Nepal we have regular power outtages. They run on a schedule for different areas in the country, and the amount of hours of load shedding goes up and down depending on the season. So this one is a bit of a scribble by candle light.

Royal Babu

Our house was once inhabited by other people that all followed a similar path as us. They worked for the same organisation as my wife and experienced a lot of the good times and the bad times that we have also experienced over here. I learn't this while back home in Aus last time when I ran into some previous tenants, it was sweet to compare notes. Since the three previous rounds of tenants the place has never been cleared out of everyones crap. Hence I use a lot of the crap for random things.

This photo I found and decided to recycle by doing a quickie drawing on it. Its actually a photo taken at Pokhara over looking Phewa lake. We were also lucky enough to make a trip there last year, it is one of the main tourist destinations here. This little drawing was inspired also by a recent trek to Everest base camp. A funny man friend on the trek discovered while he was over here that 'royal babu' meant crying baby(boy) in Nepali and used it sarcastically in broken Nepali conversation. it made our Nepali guide laugh a lot. Anyway guess you had to be there. The back of this photo has the word royal printed on it so it just reminded me of the goodtimes while we were not trekking. I hate walking especially for 13 days straight for 5ish hours or more a day, why the Jeffrey Higgons would I put my self through that. Never again.

Feels so free

Todays drawing is bought to you by Jean Michel Basquiat, well actually me but inspired by him (I kinda wish to be him in another life). If your not sure who he is, he is a famous artist from the 80's who used to run around with Andy Warhol. Said to be the first artist of African American descent to become famous. Any way the reason I did this guy is because mooks artspace have a monthly art comp which I like to work on stuff for, each month and this month their theme is famous people. The other thing I figured out when drawing this is that I love this style of drawing. I used to do it quite a bit, but have been trying to straighten out some drawings a bit. What I realised however is that drawing like this feels so right, feels so free.

Found a photo of another old nepali lady which I thought I would have a crack at drawing. She is blind in one eye it seems so no need for the other half of her broken glasses.

Made this guy this arvo. Well actually its a illustration I did from a photo of a really weathered looking little old Nepali lady. But my drawing skills/lazyness some how made her look a bit like a man. My bad. The back ground I used is actually from this site lostandtaken they have quite a few free high res texture backgrounds that you can utilise in designs or to customise a blog or something.

No threat

I like to sometimes just start making something and see where it goes. This is one of those occasions (as you can see). The process of making and creating is more important sometimes I think than the outcome.

Also I picked up a whole bunch of these security checked stickers recently while at a domestic Nepali airport. I love the contradiction of it. Gives you an example of the capability of law enforcement and security over here.

$ave me

Nepals money is a bit like monopoly money so I got the idea of writing on it to get messages around the joint (hopefully this is not to incriminating). This is mainly what I have been putting on them so far. Tigers and Rhinos are national animals to Nepal, and lots of people come here to see them in the wild, yet they are still being poached over here even in the National Parks.

Striked out

Nepal has alot of political instability. One of the things that happens here alot is a Bandh (strike/protest) which if done by the right people or enough people, can literally shut down the whole nation due to intimidation through people in numbers on the street. This happened for six days straight this week. so my friend had a barbecue and I decided to capture a few of the happenings there.
